At Vela Dental Centers we want to help you achieve your brightest smile ever. With some attention to your dietary choices, you can help give yourself excellent oral health as well as overall well-being. To help your teeth, here are some foods you can incorporate into your healthiest lifestyle

Foods for your smile

Fruit: Although fruit can be high in sugar, choices like berries and apples can actually help your teeth. These are low in sugar so they support your teeth. Apples reduce plaque thanks to their high fiber content. Chewing fiber stimulates the production of saliva which rinses bacteria and food particles.

Cheese: Cheese is good for teeth because it releases calcium, and calcium protects against bacterial acids while building tooth enamel. Dining on cheese with fruit is a good combination in protecting your teeth.

Yogurt: Unsweetened yogurt, like cheese, is rich in calcium and protein with the added benefit of probiotics. Probiotics (good bacteria) help oral health since the good bacteria crowds out thecavity-causing bacteria.

Crisp vegetables: Vegetables like celery and carrots can help remove plaque from your teeth due to their fiber content (and crunch) which act as scrubbing agents on your teeth.

Leafy greens: Spinach and kale are high in calcium, which makes them super choices for your teeth. Most greens supply folic acid which supports oral health. Toss a handful in your green smoothie or salad and you are good to go!

Nuts: Nuts are high in protein, making them good for your teeth. Almonds are rich in calcium and are delicious in salads, as snacks, or chopped and sprinkled over oatmeal.

Drinks for your smile

Your drinks can also impact your oral health. Those high in sugar, like sodas and juice (even healthy juices are sugary) can wreak havoc with your pearly whites. Your healthiest choice is water, and unsweetened drinks like herbal teas and unsweetened sports drinks. Milk is a healthy choice for teeth because of the protein and calcium, and if you are lactose intolerant, you can substitute fortified soy or almond milk.

Give yourself the gift of a healthier smile in 2016 with the resolve to eat healthier food, diligently brushing and flossing twice daily, and seeing your dentist every six months for cleanings.
