Whether young or old, teeth are important to us all. So to keep our teeth in tip top shape, we brush and floss daily. But did you know that there are more options to consider? Dental sealants can be a great way to protect your teeth from decay or damage.

When we brush our teeth, we tend to only clean the smooth surfaces of our teeth. Bristles of your toothbrush may not be able to reach the places where plaque or food resides. This is where dental sealants come into play. Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings painted on your back teeth (permanent molars), where the majority of tooth decay occurs, to prevent bacterial growth.

During a dental sealant appointment, you dentist will begin by cleaning your teeth, after which they will paint the sealant onto the tooth’s enamel, where it will become shaped and molded to your tooth. It will then harden and bond to your tooth so it can withstand the normal pressures of chewing. This process typically only takes a few minutes to complete. After your appointment, you can have the assurance that those cracks and crevices of your teeth are protected from decay for years to come.

Though sealants are generally recommended for youth, while teeth are still growing, the treatment can still be beneficial for adults as well. To schedule your appointment or find out more information on dental sealants, give our office a call today at 361.994.4900!
